Equine Assisted Psychotherapy & Learning
Professional Experiential therapy that changes lives!
Using the Eagala Model, our team of professionals and horses help individuals of all ages. At North Star, we specialize in individuals struggling with dual diagnosis (developmental/intellectual difficulties and mental health) and Military populations. We offer Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) groups for group sizes of 3-8 individuals. Although our services are offered in a group setting, each individual’s experience is tailored to meet their specific treatment and/or learning goals.
EAP and EAL both incorporate horses experientially for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a mental health professional and horse professional working with participants to address their goals. Through the experiential learning process, participants actively engage in posing questions, investigating, experimenting, being curious, problem solving, assuming responsibility, being creative, and constructing meaning. Participants engage in the process intellectually, emotionally, socially, soulfully, and/or physically. The results of the learning are personal and form the basis for future experience and learning. Relationships are developed and nurtured: participant to self, participant to others, and participant to the world at large.
Although these two treatment modalities are very similar, there are some differences between the two. In EAP groups, participants work with the treatment team to address specific treatment goals. These goals can focus on reducing symptoms of Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, PTSD, and many other mental health issues. In EAL groups, participants work with the treatment team (which can include other specialized professionals) to address learning goals. Both treatment modalities (EAP & EAL) can help participants to develop and improve many skills, as well as gain valuable insight.
These skills are built through exploring the space, interacting with the horses, and interacting with other participants. This creates a growth and learning experience that allows for the possibility to learn from natural consequences, mistakes, and successes. It encourages spontaneous opportunities for learning in a space without judgment and pre-conceptions. At North Star, we believe that you have the answers. Through guided experiences and support, you can gain the insight and tools that you need to make lasting positive changes in your life.
